Mercedes McCambridge was born on March 16, 1916, in Joliet, Illinois, USA. She attended Mundelein College in Chicago, where she developed a passion for acting. Her career began in radio, where she became known for her strong voice and dramatic performances, working on popular programs like Lights Out and Inner Sanctum Mystery.
Hollywood Breakthrough & Academy Award Win
McCambridge transitioned to film in the late 1940s and made an immediate impact. Her film debut in All the King’s Men (1949) earned her the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. She played Sadie Burke, a tough political strategist, opposite Broderick Crawford in the Oscar-winning drama.
