Geoffrey Roy Rush was born on July 6, 1951, in Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia. After his parents separated when he was five, he was raised by his mother in Brisbane.
Rush studied at the University of Queensland, majoring in English and Drama. In the 1970s, he trained at the Jacobean Drama Workshop and later honed his skills in mime and movement at the L’École Internationale de Théâtre Jacques Lecoq in Paris.
